Narrabri’s Boyce Alexander knows a fair bit about oranges – he has a large home orchard and is a popular regular supplier of oranges to Narrabri markets customers – with some record – size navels produced in his orchard over many years.
But Boyce is intrigued.
“I found the large navel, pictured, still on the tree but which had been delicately hollowed out,” he said.
“It was not gnawed at from the side, but hollowed out from the bottom.
“There was nothing for a possum, or perhaps a rat, to stand on and reach up to chew from the bottom.
“The orange is neatly hollowed out – whatever ate it made a very neat job of it – I have seen bird damage and possum damage before, but never seen one hollowed out like this.”
