Ever thought why saffron is so expensive? The plant yields just three stigma which must be extracted by hand. It is estimated that it takes up to 170,000 individual flowers to yield just one pound (0.45 kilograms) of saffron. The spice is used as a seasoning and colouring agent in food and costs thousands of dollars per kilogram . Alexander the Great added it to his baths to help heal battle wounds, as did Cleopatra, whose daily saffron-infused mare’s milk bath was said to have enhanced her legendary beauty.
