Narrabri has lost its final link to World War II following the death of veteran Arthur Wells.

Mr Wells died on Saturday, September 21 aged 97.

Many in the community will recognise Mr Wells from his frequent participation in local commemorations, particularly Anzac Day. He was again part of commemorations this year.

For many years, he has also laid a World War II wreath at the Anzac Day memorial service.

Mr Wells was presented with a commemorative medallion by the Narrabri RSL Sub-branch earlier this year in honour of his service.

Mr Wells enlisted on January 22, 1945, at 18-years-old, in the 2/1 Australian Guard Regiment, serving for a total of 1011 days. Of this time, he spent 569 days overseas.

Mr Wells was discharged on October 29, 1947, just before his 21st birthday, with his final rank being Lance Corporal.

Mr Wells was pre-deceased by his wife Patricia. He is survived by his son Dennis and daughter Sheryl and their families.
