The unveiling of new names on the Narrabri Sporting Wall of Fame will take place more frequently, if draft additions and alterations to a council policy are adopted.
Narrabri Shire Council tabled the proposed changes at the most recent council meeting.
Among the changes are unveiling new nominees for inclusion at the Australia Day awards every two years, instead of the current four years.
Council will also consider nominations for individuals who have devoted their time to supporting an athlete or have made significant contributions to the Sporting Wall of Fame. However, nominees in this category will be acknowledged for their contributions during the award ceremony, but their names will not be included onto the wall.
Council’s business paper states that it had received enquiries about recognising people who have devoted many years contributing to the wall of fame or supporting the athletes.
“Upon consideration, it would be worthwhile to acknowledge their contribution (could be a certificate or a trophy) but their name will not be on the wall. For someone’s name to be on the wall, the person needs to be an athlete who has satisfied all the criteria as per the Sporting Wall of Fame Policy,” the business paper states.
Speaking at the meeting, council’s director of planning and sustainability Donna Ausling said the team had taken on feedback following the last round of applications.
Cr Amanda Brown queried why only national and international representatives were included as part of the criteria, not state representatives.
“That’s the type of feedback we’re seeking from the community as part of the exhibition process,” Ms Ausling said.
“The feedback we received initially was around potentially tightening up the criteria, but as always we’re happy to hear that broader feedback and we will bring back a report detailing any submissions.”
Additions to the wall of fame were last announced on Australia Day in 2023.
The draft policy is available to view on council’s website and will be open to submissions until 5pm on Friday, February 7.
