To mark the 80th anniversary, the ABC shared the incredible survival story of Yvonne Engelman, 97, of Sydney who was 14-years-old in 1944 when she arrived at the concentration camp with her mother and father. An SS officer gestured to the family of three to separate. “They went to the left and I went to the right, and that was the last time I saw my parents,” she told the ABC. ”We had to strip off our clothing, shave our heads, and many of us were ushered into a room which had a lot of showers, but no water and we were locked up there all day and all night … but the gas didn’t work.”
