NAIDOC Week celebrations commenced in Narrabri last week with a ceremony held at the courthouse last Tuesday, July 8.

It was an incredibly special day to reflect, celebrate and have conversations in a safe space.

Organisers of the event, Valerie Booby and Steven Wells were both very proud of the event and the support received by the community.

“Today was the first time the Aboriginal flag has ever flown at the Narrabri Courthouse. It was a significant moment for everyone,” Valerie said.

The day involved a morning tea and barbecue, with activities such as art activities and basket weaving workshops, with the official flag raising ceremony afterwards.

“We were absolutely floored that so many people came to celebrate with us. It was important to myself and Steven that the community felt comfortable attending,” Valerie said.

“We know the feelings of the community toward the courts in general, is not always a positive one.

“It was a huge step forward to removing a part of that stigma.

The main theme surrounding NAIDOC this year is ‘The Next Generation’ with bringing forth strength, vision and legacy.

“Both Steven and I being indigenous people ourselves, think fostering our future generations is immensely important for the continuity of our culture,” Valerie said.

“So, it was such a highlight that so many children and young people in particular were present for our celebration.

“I hope this event is the start of our First Nations people looking toward our courthouse as a more inclusive and supportive environment.”

Steven Wells works as a registrar for the courthouse and knows very well how it is perceived walking into the building but was happy to see the space being filled with laughter, conversations and connection.

“Most people would look at the courthouse and think of it as a scary place, but we are simply trying to promote that it is a safe place for everyone to come together.

“We’re just trying our best to build a safe hotline for people to speak their mind while surrounded by a multitude of support and respect,” Steven said.

Attending the day myself, I had the opportunity to talk with some incredibly wise and inspiring people, such as Cliff Toomey.

Cliff explained the importance of helping the youth see what they can achieve in just a few words.

“These are our future generations, we have got to give them the vision. Because by supplying them with this, there is nothing or no one that can get in their way of achieving greatness.”
