Victory over Japan Day, more commonly known in Australia as Victory in the Pacific Day, marked the 80th anniversary since the announcement of Japanese surrender on August 15, 1945. The formal surrender ceremony actually took place on September 2, on board the US battleship USS Missouri. Japan’s surrender followed an intense period of hostilities, including the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945.
