September 15 marked 25 years since the spectacular opening ceremony for the 2000 Sydney Olympics. An audience of 110,000 people packed Stadium Australia while an estimated 3.7 billion viewers watched on TV across the world. The 2000 Sydney Olympics helped boost the NSW capital’s reputation across the world as a global city capable of hosting large international events. The opening ceremony and Sydney’s hosting of the games was also met with rave reviews, particularly by the then IOC president who famously declared that the Sydney Olympics was the best ever.
