During term three, some of our Narrabri High School students had the incredible opportunity to take part in a series of hands-on workshops at the Sydney University Plant Breeding Institute Agricultural Field Day.

The day was packed with fun and educational activities, including:

Students got their hands dirty exploring soil structure in a soil pit beneath six different crop types in a soil workshop with Dr Tim Weaver.

Students carefully used scissors and tweezers to hand-pollinate wheat, identifying anthers and stigmas like real plant scientists with Dr Anthony.

A fascinating look into where our clothes come from, how cotton is grown, and the importance of sustainable cropping and cotton production.

A guided tour of the glasshouse showcased innovative growing techniques and research in action.

The day finished with a well-earned sausage sizzle lunch – the perfect end to a fantastic field experience.

A huge thank you to the Sydney University Plant Breeding Institute and all the presenters for inspiring our students and giving them a real taste of the agricultural science world.
