Narrabri Shire Council will formalise its support for local war commemorations to assist with service coordination and operation costs.
Councillors agreed to financial assistance through to the 2028/29 financial year to assist with Anzac Day services in Narrabri, Wee Waa, Boggabri and Baan Baa. The Victory in the Pacific Day and Vietnam Veterans’ Day commemoration in Narrabri as well as Remembrance Day in Narrabri will also be supported.
Funds will be contributed to support event applications, traffic management plans, application fees, road occupancy licences, conduct of road closures and external provision of traffic control. In its report, council noted that applications for these events were made ad-hoc and the funds are already part of its budget. The new structure is meant to provide surety to local organisations, including sub-branches, in planning.
“Narrabri Shire Council acknowledges the importance of observing military and war remembrance events, and these are solemn and unifying occasions for communities throughout the shire,” the business paper states
Cr Ryan Whillas, who moved that council proceed, praised the new arrangement saying it is important council supports returned services anyway it can. This was seconded by Cr Jocellin Jansson.
“At the end of the day, we pretty much owe them everything we have now,” Cr Whillas said. “So I think it’s good that we can support them here.”
Council has allocated $18,000 in the 2025/26 year, increasing to $26,000 in 2026/27, $28,000 in 2027/28 and $30,000 in 2028/29. The current financial year’s assistance takes into account $6000 to cover the Victory in the Pacific and Vietnam Veterans’ Day commemoration held in August.
