President of the Wee Waa Community Arts and Cultural Centre Ethan Towns has made a fresh plea to keep the town’s much-loved ‘yellow door’ open, releasing a social media video calling for donations to help save the centre from closure this year.

“Unfortunately, at the end of April, the Wee Waa Arts and Cultural Centre will no longer be open – our R4R funding (Resources for Regions program) has run out, and since we were unable to get a new grant, the doors will sadly be closing. So that’s why we’re coming to you, the community, to ask for your help,” says Ethan in the video recorded by local photographer and videographer Penny Vella.

“I’m a local Wee Waa boy. I am the president of this fine centre and I’m also one of the shire’s elected councillors,” Ethan explains in the social media clip. “This arts centre has been a massive inspiration to me. It’s one of the reasons why I actually got back into community events, such as becoming a councillor. It’s the reason I started painting again because the positive energy brought by (WWCACC coordinator) Lisa Almagro and everyone else in the community really conjugated here and I was able to truly flourish.

“The Wee Waa Community Arts and Cultural Centre isn’t just for art – Rotaract runs our games nights and most of our events here. Riverbank Youth Group for at-risk children also use this area, plus many other organisations and community groups around Wee Waa and Narrabri and further.

“This place is incredibly important to Wee Waa and we can’t keep losing stuff. We need to keep the resources we have here, especially this centre – it’s too valuable to lose,” added Ethan.

“So, we’re coming to you to ask for your help. We desperately need donations to keep the centre alive,” says Ethan in the social media clip.

“We didn’t get any grants, unfortunately, we were literally going against people in Sydney for funding. So we’re hoping that you, the people of Wee Waa, or even the Narrabri Shire or further, will come and help us out.

“Please help us in this situation because without it, unfortunately, we are closing at the end of April. So please, if you want to donate … however much money you want, every dollar helps.”

WWCACC has thanked its supporters for their generosity and encouragement so far, explaining the committee is continuing to explore every possible avenue for funding, partnerships and support to ensure that our Yellow Door remains open.

“We’re still here, pushing forward and dreaming big. Thank you for standing with us, for cheering us on and reminding us why this work matters.”
