One of the most anticipated events on the Wee Waa golfing calendar was held on Sunday as 19 teams lined up for the 2026 Sledgers Day.
There was $1500 worth of cash and prizes up for grabs at the 18-hole three-person ambrose event, and the winners were Dick Crutcher, Les Ross and Shannon Bartz with a score of 57-and-a-half points.
Runners-up with 59 points were Ben Wilson, Luke Humphries and John Galagher, and then in third place were Nathan Melton, Daniel Lowder and Anthony Gray.
A putting competition was also held after the 18 holes had been played, which was taken out by Lucas and Adam Hatton and Tim Cameron.
All of those winning teams donated their prizemoney either back to the club or over the bar for everyone else to enjoy during dinner.
Local golf club member and Sledger John Galagher told The Courier it was an enjoyable day.
“How the Sledgers first started was a group of us got together to try and organise a day to help raise money for the club itself,” Galagher said.
“We all throw in to help cover sponsorship and the prizes, and we go around to ask local businesses here in town to support us. I don’t think there were many businesses that didn’t support us this year. It was great.
“We had an auction and raised over $8000 from that, but we don’t know the overall figure yet. It would be close to $10,000 I think.
“It was a good day to support the club. We had really good numbers. It was great to see so many people out there playing. We haven’t had numbers like that out there playing for a long time.
“We had two teams from Narrabri there and even one team from Coonamble came over. The rest were from Wee Waa.
“Everyone enjoyed themselves and it was a very charitable day.”
The Wee Waa Golf Club board was thrilled with the success of the day and thanked the Sledgers group for their support.
“Wee Waa Golf Club board of directors would like to thank the Sledgers Group for staging such a wonderful day on Saturday, and it was a success both on the golf course and very much so financially as well,” a Facebook post read.
“Thanks for your support and the great community spirit you guys presented.
“The club will live on such events.”
Next up for Wee Waa Golf Club is the annual Wee Waa Open, which will be contested later this month on Sunday, March 15.
