Narrabri NAIDOC celebration a success

NARRABRI’s NAIDOC community celebration was a success with up to 200 people attending festivities held at Collins Park on Friday.

The event was a collaboration between Narrabri and District Community Aid Service (NDCAS), Narrabri Local Aboriginal Land Council, and Narrabri Shire Council.

Funding support from the National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA) enabled the free community event to proceed.

“Overall, it was a success. We had more than 10 services also attend,” NDCAS community engagement and communications coordinator Kayla Nehrkorn said.

Cr Ethan Towns was the shire representative and welcomed attendees to the event.

Traditional Aboriginal games were facilitated by Narrabri Local Aboriginal Land Council chief executive officer Lynn Trindall.

Face painting, activities and prizes and gift bags for elders also featured as part of the offering.

Mrs Trindall also expressed her delight with the support for the event.

“It was such a great day,” she said.

“The kids thought the activities were great.”

Enjoying the NAIDOC activities were Scouts, back, Logan Gould, Partick Mullins, Maddie Dufty and, front, David Dufty.

Mrs Trindall said feedback since the event had also been positive, with people commenting on the old-fashioned games.

“That’s the old way we did things years ago,” she said.

Mrs Trindall offered her thanks to NDCAS and Narrabri Shire Council for the important role each played in the festivities, particularly highlighting the work of Ms Nehrkorn, of NDCAS, and Sharlee Bruce, from the shire.
