Brendan Davey marks pro debut with rousing win

A ROUSING victory has marked the professional debut for Narrabri boxer Brendan Davey.

Brendan was part of the recent Rise Future Stars II pro-am fight night held in Tamworth.

The return to the ring has been a long time coming for Brendan, who has held a deep passion for the sport since his younger days alongside his brother Shannon Davey.

Growing up, the pair had set their sights on professional boxing.

After competing in the Olympics, Shannon made his professional debut and the Davey family can proudly boast of two pros following Brendan’s launch and success.

“It was an itch I need to scratch,” Brendan said.

“It’s always been the dream for Shannon and I to go pro.

“You’re looked at more differently when you’re a professional.”

At the recent fight night in Tamworth, the biggest held in the North West region, Brendan came up against Indonesian boxer Willem Muster.

“We had a few exchanges at the start,” Brendan said.

“He was a bit of a heavy-handed fella.

“I then started to find my rhythm and range.”

While the fight ended relatively quickly as a TKO in Brendan’s favour, he was pleased to walk away from the night with the win under his belt.

Boxing has taken the back seat in Brendan’s life in recent years while prioritising work and family.

“I’ve tried to have a few comebacks,” he said.

“I thought I’d make the most of the opportunity.”

Leading up to his debut, Brendan has been travelling to Gunnedah to train at the Black n Blue Boxing Gym with Dave Syphers and Wade Ryan as his coaches.

“They’ve got a lot of experience,” Brendan said.

“It was good to have that experience in the corner.”

That training has been underway for the last five months.

“I had to get the rust out,” Brendan said.

“Being a little bit older now, it was a bit tougher.”

Adding to the night was the large contingent of Narrabri supporters who travelled to cheer on Brendan.

Proud parents Leanne and Paul Davey as well as brother Shannon were also there for the special night.

“Boxing has been a massive part of our lives,” Brendan said.

Brendan was overwhelmed with the support he received, selling five tables on the night and with close to 100 supporters cheering him on.

He was also grateful for support from local businesses.

“Thank you to everyone for coming,” he said.
