Sensational Sid scoops another honour

WINNING the NSW Waratahs’ Chris Whitaker Medal is the icing on the cake for Sid Harvey, who has enjoyed a successful debut Super Rugby Pacific season.

The award is typically presented to the team’s most promising or stand-out young player and is named in honour of the former Waratahs and Wallabies halfback.

Harvey, a former junior Blue Boar, was also recently presented with Super Rugby Pacific Rookie of the Year.

“I was happy with this year being a learning year,” Harvey said.

“I wasn’t really expecting a whole heap of games.

“It’s been such a cool season.”

The Super Rugby honour takes pride of place at home as does Harvey’s newest addition with the Chris Whitaker Medal.

But the most special part of his inaugural season came at his debut game.

“Seeing my family come together for it was pretty special,” Harvey said.

Getting a win against the Brumbies in Canberra also rates highly.

“I felt I had my hand in that,” he said.

“The win in Fiji was also special.”

Harvey is grateful for the support of his coaches in what has been a mammoth year.

“They always back my capabilities,” he said.

“Their praise was nice at times but I’ve enjoyed them challenging me.

“They told me there would be mistakes in my first season.”

With the Super Rugby season at a close, Harvey’s playing time is now spent with Easts after recently making his First Grade debut.

Harvey has his eyes set on a few more goals, another being a premiership with the Eastern Suburbs team.

His continued development is also front of mind.

“That’s day in, day out,” he said.

“Going hard at the gym and going hard on the field.”

Once the Shute Shield season is over, then it will be time for Super Rugby AU.

The Australian A tour to the US later in the year is also on Harvey’s radar.

When he has some downtime, Harvey would like to return home and spend time with family and friends in Narrabri.

Family is incredibly important to Harvey and he credits their support, particularly mentioning his parents Denis and Carmel.

“I can’t thank them enough for helping me achieve my goals,” he said.

“They keep me humble.”

Harvey is also enjoying watching his sister Martha continue to develop in rugby as they share similar paths in the sport they both love.

Martha recently marked her starting debut with Easts at Leichardt Oval and has also played with the Waratahs women.

“We try to help each other out where we can,” Harvey said.

In between all of this, Harvey also still reminisces about his days playing as a junior in Narrabri.

“I spent a lot of time at the Narrabri Rugby Club alone, and with my dad,” he said. “Some of the most enjoyable time I’ve had playing was spent with the junior Blue Boars.

“I treasure those experiences and the mates I’ve made in all sports.”
