Andrew and Fiona Smart enjoyed a successful weekend at the Narrabri Golf Club last weekend which was completed by a Morton Memorial victory playing side-by-side.

The husband and wife duo entered Sunday’s annual tournament having won their respective events at the club on Saturday – Andrew the men’s A-grade monthly medal with a gross score of 77, and Fiona the ladies’ monthly medal with a nett score of 74.

Andrew also took out the nearest to pin on the fifth hole during Saturday’s play.

On Sunday Fiona and Andrew played as teammates in the Morton Memorial four-ball-best-ball event.

They finished with a winning score of 48 points.

It was a nail-biting finish with second-placed Lyn Shearer and Peter Butler finishing second on a countback on 47 points from third-placed Rob and Judy Maunder.

The Smart duo also finished with a nearest to pin each on the day.

Andrew took out nearest to pin on the eighth hole while Fiona claimed nearest to pin on the 12th.

There were two other nearest to pins won on the day.

Daniel Spence won nearest to pin fifth and Bob Taylor won nearest to pin 16th.

There were 40 players in attendance at the tournament on Sunday which was described by event organisers as pleasing.

The annual two-person mixed team four-ball-best-ball stableford is played each year in memory of the late Hamish and Helen (nee Leitch) Morton.

Both were former Narrabri Golf Club members who died in a plane crash in 1953. The couple were en route from Sydney to London to attend the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II at Westminster Abbey on June 2.

The Morton Memorial golf day was originally played as a singles’ event for the Narrabri Ex-Services Diggers Golf Day but was changed to a mixed event in 1964.
