Sam Smith relocating to New Dunesk, a reference to the original Dunesk in South Australia, research reveals the importance of camels to the SA desert community and some history. Camels became the preferred mode of transport because they were more gentle in carrying valuables like wine, spirits and ales with fewer breakages than bullock teams. And there are several different kinds of camels – the ‘Mekraua’ for fast riding, the ‘Scinde’ camel, a hill camel and a beast of burden and the ‘Kandahar’ camel which was a very heavy animal for heavy transport.
