The Narrabri Harness Racing Club’s annual TAB meeting was held at the Tamworth Paceway on Easter Monday.

The meeting, which included the Santos Cup, the Narrabri Cup and the John Dean Memorial races among others, was scheduled to be held at the Narrabri Showground but was relocated to Tamworth due to Harness Racing NSW’s race meeting regionalisation.

Kicking off proceedings was the TAB Odds and Evens pace which was won by a Narrabri pacer.

Jarred Hetherinton-trained debutant Night Lights, driven by Hunter Valley reinsman Mick Formosa, started that race from pole position but galloped for a few strides at the start of the 1980-metre race which saw her fall back to third. But she recovered and went on to win her first race in Australia by 1.7 metres.

From then on it was the Tom Ison show. The Tamworth reinsman, who is now based on the Central Coast, won five of the next seven races on the day, driving to victory in races two, three, five, seven and eight.

In the other three races at the meeting he finished either second or third on what was a memorable day for Ison.

In race two he drove the Anthony Missen-trained Mickey Ramone to a half-neck win.

The Hetherington-trained Bettor Getta Lover was the only Narrabri-based pacer in action in race two.

Driven by Formosa, Bettor Getta Lover started the race from the number nine barrier in the second row as the $2 favourite but finished fifth, coming in 6.4 metres behind Mickey Ramone.

The next four Ison winners were all Roy Roots Junior-trained pacers.

In race three Black Eight started from the number five barrier on the front row and secured a 3.7-metre win.

There were no Narrabri-trained pacers in that race.

The fourth race was contested across a 1609-metre distance after the first three were all 1980-metre events.

It was won by Kanye Crusader which was driven by Jack Callaghan to a photo finish victory for trainer Clayton Harmey.

There was one Narrabri-trained pacer involved in race four as the first horse from the Shepherdson stable ran.

That was the Garry Shepherdson-trained Sumthin Special which was driven by Chris Shepherdson.

Sumthin Special started the race from the number 10 barrier on the second row. She was checked midway through the race and galloped which put her back in last position by about 10 metres.

The mare recovered but she could only manage a seventh-placed finish.

The fifth race of the day was the 1980-metre K and K Seymour / Tampscott Ladyship pace for mares.

It was the second of two races with no Narrabri-trained pacers listed to run.

That race was won by the Roots Junior-trained Watching You Dream which was driven by Ison.

Watching You Dream led comfortably for most of the race but ended up just holding on to win a photo finish as a fast-finishing Gregory Coney-trained, Jemma Coney-driven Always A Lexus stormed home late to almost steal the victory.

Race six was the 1980-metre Santos Cup which was won by the Mark Callaghan-trained mare Repartee.

It was a second win of the day for Repartee’s driver Jack Callaghan who also drove Kanye Crusader to victory in race four.

Finishing second by just 1.3 metres in the Santos Cup was the race’s favourite He’s The Warrior, driven by Ison for Roots Junior.

There were two Narrabri-trained pacers involved in the Santos Cup.

The Peter Shepherdson-trained, Chris Shepherdson-driven Capital Cullect ran home fifth, while the Jarred Hetherington-trained Unico Enchantress driven by Formosa finished eighth.

The seventh race of the day was the 2360-metre John Dean Memorial which was won by Glengarry Rose as Roots Junior and Ison combined for a third victory of the day.

Placing second in that race by 8.6 metres was the Hetherington-trained Padrisimo which started from the seven barrier on the second row.

Padrisimo was driven by Formosa who also drove the Hetherington-trained Night Lights to victory in race one.

Finishing five-and-a-half metres behind Padrisimo in the John Dean Memorial was the Peter Shepherdson-trained, Chris Shepherdson-driven Kid Montana which finished fourth after starting from the nine barrier on the second row.

A third Narrabri pacer was in action in the John Dean Memorial which was the Hetherington-trained Corporal Luna which started from the four barrier in the front row and was driven to a fifth-placed finish by Guy Chapple.

The eighth and final race of the day was the 2360-metre Shop2390 Narrabri Cup.

That was won by the Roots Junior-trained, Ison-driven Bohannan which started from the number eight barrier on the second row and secured the win by the narrowest of margins, seeing off the Mark Callaghan-trained, Jack Callaghan-driven Glenn Ford in a photo finish.

There was one Narrabri-trained pacer in action in the Narrabri Cup which was the Garry Shepherdson-trained, Chris Shepherdson-driven Future Fun.

Future Fun started from the number four barrier on the front row and finished sixth.
