Elderly, infirm or disabled people in Narrabri now only have to pick up the phone to have free home delivery of essential items.
A community initiative from Narrabri Chamber of Commerce in response to the COVID-19 crisis will see Narrabri Radio Cabs deliver items like basic food supplies and pharmacy items to local people.
“Whitehaven Coal and Civeo have immediately thrown their financial support behind our project,” said Chamber president Russell Stewart.
“Whitehaven and Civeo have generously offered to fund the free delivery by cab of the important items for older residents with limited mobility or inability to get to the shops.”
“The Chamber of Commerce’s initiative is a win-win-win for the community,” said Mr Stewart.
The Chamber’s initiative will operate across Narrabri and be a boon for local residents over 65 or disabled who don’t have mobility or access to shops.
“Eligible people can ring up their suppliers, organise their purchases over the phone and then ring Narrabri Radio Cabs to arrange delivery to their door,” said Mr Stewart.
“Narrabri Radio Cabs offered a discounted rate, but that offer has been declined – everyone needs support in these times and Narrabri Radio Cabs are like every business, doing it a bit tougher.
“Thanks to the generosity of Whitehaven and Civeo, cabs will be paid full fares for deliveries, a move that the sponsors and the Chamber were adamant should apply.
“The cabbies offered special low fares, but the Chamber said definitely not.”
Narrabri Radio Cabs local director Doug Orman said local cab operators and drivers were pleased to be part of the project.
Cabbies already offer service beyond picking up and delivering passengers, helping shoppers, the elderly and others, out of stores and into homes with parcels and bags.
Residents who want to use the service can order their groceries and other purchases from Westlands Supermarket at Narrabri West and Sue and Graham Thomas’ store, Narrabri Pharmacy and CAMstart Pharmacy or other local suppliers.
The orders will be picked up by Narrabri Radio Cabs and delivered to their door.
“We thank Whitehaven and Civeo,” said Mr Stewart. “These businesses are continually providing support to Narrabri community.
“As president of the Chamber I am absolutely delighted that we have such good relations with them.”
