Narrabri Golf Club and House of Golf hosted a free clinic for junior golfers last Thursday and Friday.

House of Golf’s Steve Bishop, who has been a golf pro for 42 years, shared his wisdom with 21 golfers aged six to 13-years old across the two days.

House of Golf is a mobile golf shop that supports 12 country clubs which do not have golf pros.

“We host the clinics to try to promote junior golf for free out in the bush,” Bishop told The Courier.

“We do this mainly to promote the game and get the young ones in playing.

“The Narrabri kids loved it.

“They did improve and we had some girls there which was really good to see, we had three young girls turn up.

“If you start kids young at golf they pick it up really quick.

“It’s like riding a bike, it’s a skill for life.”

Bishop said that the sport must focus on its future to stop it from dying.

“It’s important, if you look at the average age of golfers in any club in NSW its up around 70-plus these days,” Bishop said.

“Soon there’ll be no one playing golf, it’s one of the sports that’s dying. It’s booming during COVID-19 but its the future we are concerned about.”

Bishop said that Narrabri is a beautiful place and its local golf club has incredible facilities from the club house to the course.

“Paul [Club Narrabri chief executive Paul Gordon] is very good to us,” Bishop said.

“Our aim is to get people out on the golf course and get people to enjoy what Narrabri has to offer.

“It’s a great clubhouse and a great course. Narrabri is a lovely town and it has great facilities at its local golf club.”

Bishop said that House of Golf would host a clinic for adults before the year concludes.

He also encouraged juniors to head over to the Narrabri Golf Club each Sunday morning and practise under the guidance of local golf teacher Rob Butler.
