Northwest Speedway Club Narrabri president and local Formula 500 driver Scott Connole has turned his attention to the final round of the Hoosier Challenge which will be held at the Oakburn Park Speedway in Tamworth on Saturday after he finished fifth at the NSW Titles event in Dubbo last weekend.

The Hoosier Challenge is a three-round series, all of which are hosted by the Tamworth club.

Connole won the feature race in the first round back on November 14 last year before a racing incident meant he was unable to finish the feature in round two on January 23.

The Narrabri driver enters this Saturday’s third and final round well and truly in the hunt for the 2020-21 title.

At the Morris Park Speedway in Dubbo last Saturday, Connole qualified fifth for the A-main feature final out of 19 Formula 500 drivers.

He drove home fourth in his first two 10-lap heats after starting at the eight in heat one and six in heat two, before securing a podium finish in the third heat after starting in pole position and placing third.

Connole then started at the five for the 25-lap feature and finished fifth.

He slid back to seventh during the race but overtook two drivers ahead of him to achieve his goal.

“We were over the moon with fifth,” the Narrabri man said.

“Top five was the goal we set, it’s always great to set a goal and achieve it.

“Realistically I don’t think I could have got any higher than fifth with the calibre of drivers that were there, they were the best of the best.”

Victorian driver Jordan Rae was the feature winner, while fellow Victorian Terry Rankin placed second and Illawarra’s Lachlan Caunt claimed the third podium finish.

This Saturday’s Oakburn Park event will be both the Tamworth club’s and Connole’s last for the 2020-21 season. It will get underway at 2pm.
