Wee Waa Bowling Club has a maiden A-grade men’s Singles champion for the first time in 20 years after Toby Reynolds defeated Todd Cowan in the decider on Saturday afternoon.
Both Reynolds and Cowan had never competed in an A-grade Singles final which meant that for the first time since 2001, this year’s winner would have never won the crown on a previous occasion.
Reynolds was victorious after outscoring Cowan 31-13 across 28 ends.
Reynolds established an early lead when he claimed the first five ends of the contest to go ahead 6-0.
Cowan then fought back, winning the next three ends to reduce the deficit to just one point after the two bowlers had completed eight ends.
Reynolds’ 6-5 lead quickly became a 12-5 one just four ends later after he scored the next six points.
Both bowlers then scored three points each as they won two of the next four ends each which made the score 15-8 to Reynolds after 16 ends.
He extended that lead to 14 points when he scored a three and a pair of twos across the next three ends to make the score 22-8.
That became 27-9 after the 22nd end had been played which left Reynolds requiring just four more points to claim the championship.
However, determined to keep his head afloat and remain in the contest, Cowan won the next three ends while picking up four points to reduce the deficit to 27-13.
But Reynolds was able to get the job done as he scored the required four shots across the next three ends as the final score finished 31-13.
Wee Waa Bowling Club now turns its attention to the Zone 3 Bowls State Singles sectional playoffs which it will host this weekend.
Wee Waa bowler Justin Knight was the only entrant into the State Singles category which means he has automatically progressed through to the Inverell final series in that division.
There were four entries into the State Senior Singles sectional playoffs in Wee Waa, however two have been forced to withdraw due to medical reasons.
The other two bowlers, Wee Waa’s Steve Berger and Clancy Hamilton, will now contest a sectional final on Saturday.
There have also been five entries for the President’s Reserve Singles Championships sectional play at Wee Waa which include Wee Waa bowlers Dustyn and Kyne Allen, Hunter Doring, Brett Pillar and Sean Anderson.
Lady bowlers will also contest the Namoi District Triples at Wee Waa this weekend.
