Wee Waa Fishing Club has welcomed a $2000 donation from the Lower Namoi Cotton Growers Association and Cotton Australia for restocking fingerlings in the Namoi River.
“We really appreciate the generous donation and ongoing support,” said Wee Waa Fishing Club representative John Tully.
Mr Tully said the drought had a big impact on aquaculture and it was important to keep the river healthy.
“The river is the lifeblood of town, a fisherman’s paradise,” he said.
“We’ll be restocking it with yellowbelly and Murray cod.”
Mr Tully said “the river hasn’t looked this good in years” and he expected plenty of locals to be fishing this summer, and enjoying the upgraded boat ramp facilities along with a ‘soon to be installed’ fish cleaning table.
The fishing club will work with the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment to purchase fingerlings from a hatchery, and plan to have a release day with local families in the near future.
