The Narrabri Amateur Fishing Club held a fish release on Saturday where about 12,000 cod fingerlings were introduced into the Namoi River.

Members of the club released the fingerlings at different points of the river from the Mollee Weir to Baan Baa.

It is hoped that the release will help boost the number of fish in the river as many older fish were lost with the drought drying up the river into isolated holes.

The fingerlings that were released on Saturday ranged from 5-10cm long and can reach 20cm in their first year, 50cm in two years and 80cm in four to five years.

There is a slot limit for Murray cod which is 55 to 75cm.

Saturday’s fish release was not the usual social event that it normally would be.

Pickup times from the Narrabri Fish Farm were staggered to implement social distancing, a requirement during the current COVID-19 pandemic.

The Narrabri Amateur Fishing Club said that it was great to see some water in the river and that it was starting to clear up ‘visibility-wise’.
