A memorable 2021 bowls season for teammates Todd Cowan and Justin Knight continued in style on Saturday when the duo combined to win Wee Waa Bowling Club’s A-grade Pairs decider.
Their latest triumph saw them win a match that had actually started 13 weeks earlier.
Cowan and Knight challenged Toby Reynolds and Cody Booby in the final and produced a sensational comeback on Saturday to get the job done as they claimed a 23-17 victory.
As previously reported, that match got underway at 1.30pm on Saturday, August 14. Not long after the contest had begun, word came through from local MPs on social media that all of NSW was set to go into lockdown from 5pm that afternoon. Bowlers were advised that the club would be closing at that time, and matches were put on hold at 4pm.
Reynolds and Booby had combined to establish an 11-9 lead after 10 ends of play at that stage after both sides had won five ends each.
Saturday’s action resumed with the 11th end which Cowan and Knight scored one shot on to make the score 11-10, but Reynolds and Booby then responded with a four on the 12th to go ahead 15-10.
With six ends to play, Reynolds and Booby held a six-shot lead after they scored a one on the 15th which made the score 17-11.
That was the last point they would score as Cowan and Knight played brilliant bowls across the remaining six ends to overcome their deficit.
They scored a five on the 16th end then a two on the 17th to go ahead 18-17.
Another two on the 18th end gave them a three-shot advantage before they scored one point on the 19th, the 20th and the final end to win the 21-end match 23-17.
That victory was the two teammates’ fourth major win in 2021.
In February, they teamed up with fellow Wee Waa bowlers Ty and Kevin Baker to win the 2021 Zone 3 Bowls State Fours sectional final in Wee Waa.
That saw them advance to the zone finals which they also won at the Armidale City Bowling Club later that month.
In April, they teamed up with Booby to win the Zone 3 State Triples Wee Waa sectional final before going on to lose the semi-final of that competition at zone level in Lightning Ridge later that month.
They also won the Wee Waa sectional final of the Zone 3 State Pairs finals in June before they narrowly missed out on victory in the zone final for that competition at South Tamworth Bowling Club in July when they went down 20-16.
Meanwhile, there were three other matches played at Wee Waa Bowling Club across the weekend.
In Consistency Singles, Dustyn Allen defeated Bruce Cowan 150-82 and Brett Pillar beat Phil Lawford 152-134, while Kyne Allen downed Peter Allen 32-18 in a C-grade Singles match.
