Narrabri Touch’s highly-anticipated 2022 mixed season got underway at the Cooma Oval fields on Monday evening.
Five of the seven scheduled games went ahead in round one after two teams forfeited their season openers. TRTW, Tapscott Pumpers, Agies, Tradies and Ladies, Who’s Shout, Hammer Time and the Sprayerbarn Spinouts were all victorious.
TRTW defeated Kerrigans 9-4, the Tapscott Pumpers outscored RSL Guys and Gals 11-0, Agies and Tradies and Ladies were victorious via forfeit against Witty Wizards and Cougars, respectively, Who’s Shout overcame Lumberjacks (and Jills) 6-4, Hammer Time beat Hounddogs 6-4 and the Sprayerbarn Spinouts downed Win or Booze 5-2 as more than 10 tries a field, on average, were scored across the first round.
Jayden Hayne and Emma John both went over for a hat-trick of tries to combine for six of TRTW’s nine points in its win against Kerrigans. Their teammates Ryley Sadler, Jock Small and Cameron Baguley also crossed for a try each. Two of the Kerrigans’ four tries were scored by Michael Haire, while the other two were shared between Brett Allison and Mark Rottger.
The Tapscott Pumpers were electric in their season opener against RSL Guys and Gals. Sid Harvey went over for five tries in his team’s 11-0 win and Tom Craig bagged the third hat-trick of the evening across all fields. Their teammates Michael Cain, Mereka Gleeson and Chase Magner all scored a try each.
Those two games were the only two which went ahead in the first of the two timeslots in round one.
However, despite winning by a forfeit, Tradies and Ladies were still determined to take the field and held an intra-team match.
One of the games in the second timeslot saw Who’s Shout down the Lumberjacks (and Jills) 6-4. Luke Flood and Morgan Jones both bagged doubles in their side’s win and their teammates Rebecca Artis and Ken Nolan scored a try each. Two of the Lumberjacks (and Jills)’s tries were scored by Clayton Pursche while Brendon Ward and Jack Pixley went over for the other two.
An impressive Tom Nolan hat-trick helped Hammer Time overcome Hounddogs 6-4 in the opening round. Nolan’s teammates Linton Grumley, Georgie Hancock and Toby Knight all scored a try each, while Hounddogs’ four were shared between Blake Brown, Carly Baxter, Ryan McFetridge and Emily McFetridge.
The biggest winning margin in the second timeslot of matches was just three points as Sprayerbarn Spinouts beat Win or Booze 5-2. Brooke Field and Luke Tuckey both crossed twice for the Spinouts and their teammate Jydon Hill went over for the other try.
Win or Booze’s two tries were both scored by Keegan Richardson.
