Narrabri Shire Council has been successful in securing $280,000 in funding under round two of the federal and NSW government’s 2021/22 School Zone Infrastructure sub-program to upgrade the Narrabri Public School pedestrian crossing at Barwan Street.

Narrabri Shire mayor Ron Campbell said the improvements will see new infrastructure installed and improve the pedestrian safety of students making their way to and from school.

“This project will significantly improve safety and ensure the crossing and footpath access is suitable for all abilities.

“Council’s successful application will include the installation of a new pedestrian crossing including pram ramps and pedestrian island in Barwan Street where the current pedestrian crossing is located in front of the Narrabri Public School and Narrabri TAFE campus.

“Council will also be taking the opportunity whilst these works are being undertaken to replace the kerb and guttering between Dewhurst and Doyle Streets on both sides as part of council’s kerb and guttering replacement program, with the footpath on the Narrabri Public School side also being replaced.

“Council understands that these important infrastructure improvements will cause disruption to the community, however, the outcome of increased safety and addition of renewed infrastructure in this education precinct will be of benefit for years to come.”

Pedestrian and traffic management plans will be in place during this time.

Works are scheduled to start on Monday, March 14.
