Narrabri Shire Youth Council has a new deputy mayor, following the resignation of Charlotte Penberthy from the position.

Wee Waa’s Mackenzie Jones was appointed by her fellow councillors and will represent the youth community alongside Youth mayor Jordan Kay, Youth secretary Poppy Smith and other elected members.

Mackenzie is a Year 11 Wee Waa High student whose goal in joining the Youth Council was to ‘guide Narrabri Shire Council in building and changing facilities to best suit the needs of people, particularly younger people in the Narrabri Shire.’

Miss Jones feels privileged to have been elected as deputy mayor for the Narrabri Shire Youth Council and is grateful for the opportunity it brings and for having the ability to support other members’ ideas and encourage their implementation.

“The role of deputy mayor also gives me confidence in my leadership skills and will deepen my understanding of what it means to be a proactive and valued leader,” she said. “I’d also like to thank previous deputy mayor, Charlotte Penberthy, for her dedication towards the Youth Council and showing what it is to be a great leader.”

The role of the Narrabri Shire Youth Council is to identify gaps in services, provide a platform for input into local youth-related initiatives, enhance engagement and address any issues relating to young people.

One of Council’s current programs initiated by the group is a youth mental health podcast project, young people are invited to submit an Expression of Interest. Visit Council’s website for more information. Applications close on Friday, June 24, 2022.
