Narrabri Shire has welcomed 22 new citizens at a citizenship ceremony as part of Australian Citizenship Day celebrations.

The new citizens, from various parts of the world, gathered at the multi-purpose room at the aquatic centre for the ceremony and following celebrations.

Narrabri Shire already boasts a culturally diverse community that is continually growing as more and more people from other countries make their homes here.

The 22 new citizens, and their home countries, adds to the cultural diversity of the shire.

This year marks the 21st anniversary of Australian Citizenship Day.

Mayor Ron Campbell said Narrabri Shire’s newest citizens hailed from all around the globe.

“Originally from Fiji, Korea, Sri Lanka, Ireland, India, Saudi Arabia, Germany, Thailand, Nepal, Cambodia, Philippines and the United Kingdom, I am thrilled that they have chosen this part of the world as their new home,” he said.

Cr Campbell extended a warm welcome to the new Australians and said there were many reasons to settle in Narrabri Shire.

“We have beautiful urban and rural landscapes, friendly communities and plentiful opportunities to work, study and raise a family,” Cr Campbell said.

The citizenship ceremony is the final step in securing Australian residency where each person makes the pledge of commitment to share Australia’s democratic beliefs and respect the rights and liberties of the people of Australia.

Each new citizen received a certificate confirming their permanent status as well as a gift bag on behalf of the shire.

Following the official formalities, morning tea was enjoyed by the gathering.
