J and D Weed Management and Priag Patriots both entered the third round of Narrabri District Cricket Association’s 2022/23 season Coates Hire Namoi Super Slog campaign off the back of round two victories, and it was the J and D men who prevailed when those two teams went head-to-head at Collins Park.
J and D Weed Management batted first after winning the toss in its first match of the calendar year following the Christmas and New Year break, and the side made 5-116 in its 20 overs.
It then limited Priag Patriots to 85 runs before Dylan Segundo wrapped up the game in style with a triple wicket maiden in the 18th over to earn his team a 31-run victory.
It was a result that saw J and D Weed Management join Specialised Civil Services on top of the table.
All four teams in the NDCA’s franchise T20 competition went into round three having won once and lost once, and Specialised Civil Services defeated WTC Group by five runs at Hogan Oval in the other match.
J and D Weed Management’s innings at Collins Park got off to a familiar start as Nick Tomlinson and Sid Harvey produced another commanding first-wicket partnership.
Three weeks after the duo combined for 75 runs in their first win of the year against WTC Group at Hogan Oval, they put on 65 runs to get their side on the front foot early against the Patriots.
J and D Weed Management was 0-60 at the halfway point of the innings and then added five more runs from the first four balls of the 11th over before Priag skipper Cooper Brayshaw dismissed Harvey (34), who was caught by Nathan Trindall.
Brayshaw struck again in the 13th over when he produced a wicket maiden, at the start of which he knocked over Greg Melton (2), who was caught by Luke Baker.
That made the score 2-68, and the Patriots made it 3-75 in the 15th when Clay Hoffman caught Mark Page (2) from the bowling of Bernard O’Connor.
Tomlinson reached 50 in the 18th over and eventually made his way to 53 before he was bowled by Trindall in the 19th.
Luke Baker bowled the final over of the innings and took his side’s fifth and final wicket with a ball to spare when he removed Aidan King (0), who was caught by Hoffman.
Kaleb Mowle faced the final delivery and scored two runs, and at the other end Segundo finished unbeaten on 17.
Brayshaw (2-14 from four overs) was Priag’s best with the ball, and teammates Baker (1-5 from one over), O’Connor (1-12 from two overs) and Trindall (1-19 from four overs) combined for the other three.
Priag Patriots were determined to produce a similar start to J and D Weed Management’s, however, their first-wicket partnership fell 74 runs short of that of their opponents as Hamish
Duncan (1) was run out in the first over.
That made the score 1-1, which became 2-6 in the second over when Harvey bowled Jakeb Nipperess (6).
Duncan’s opening batting partner Jake Brayshaw (6) was the third batsman to fall when he was caught from the bowling of Greg Melton in
the fifth over.
That wicket made the score 3-20 and left dangerous duo Josh Trindall and Bernard O’Connor at the crease, but their partnership only contributed 10 runs before Trindall (5) was run out by Mitch Foster in the seventh over.
Patriots captain Cooper Brayshaw then joined O’Connor in the middle and they steered their team back on track with a 39-run partnership that was broken by a sensational piece of fielding in the 13th over.
Page bowled that over and delivered three dot balls before O’Connor scored three runs, which put him at the non-striker’s end.
The next ball was driven back towards the stumps by Brayshaw and Page managed to get a finger to the ball, which then hit the stumps and caught O’Connor out of his crease as he was forced to depart for a team-best score of 31.
Page then took two wickets in the 15th over when he trapped Brayshaw (17) in front and removed Nathan Trindall (2), who was caught by Harvey.
Those wickets made the score 7-82, and the Patriots scored three more runs before Segundo delivered a ferocious match-winning over in the 18th when he bowled DJ Allen (1), Jake Cooper (0) and Luke Baker (0).
Segundo finished the innings as his side’s best with the ball with 3-11 from four overs.
There were also three runouts in that innings, and J and D Weed Management’s other wickets were taken by Page (2-25 from four overs), Melton (1-11 from three overs) and Harvey (1-13 from three overs).
The competition will resume with a blockbuster double header for each team on Friday and Saturday.
In round four on Friday night, J and D Weed Management will play against Specialised Civil Services at Hogan Oval while Priag Patriots challenge WTC Group at Collins Park.
The following night in round five, J and D Weed Management will meet WTC Group at Collins Park while Priag Patriots go up against Specialised Civil Services at Hogan Oval.
The sixth and final round of the regular season campaign will then be played on Friday, January 20, and will be followed by the grand final on Saturday, January 28, which will be played at Collins Park between the teams ranked first and second on the ladder.
