Boggabri was a hive of activity last Thursday as four massive spans arrived for Narrabri Shire Council’s Boston Street bridge upgrade.

Numerous trucks and trailers arrived during the week as did the enormous crane to lift the spans into place on the bridge.

The four spans were picked up from Red Head in Newcastle on Wednesday night and left on their long slow journey to Boggabri at 2.30am on Thursday morning.

The drivers encountered rain and hail on their journey.

One driver told The Courier that the span weighs 47 tonnes and then the weight of the truck and trailer makes the load approximately 97 tonnes in total.

The trucks travelled around 65 kilometres per hour on the open road, however, coming up the Murrurundi range it is a lot slower and one driver said that he was using one litre of diesel per 450 to 500 metres.

All four spans were put in place and the massive crane and trailers were packing up and leaving on Friday.

Funding for the bridge replacement was secured with $2.6 million from round seven of the NSW government’s Resources for Regions program, combined with a co-contribution of $800,000 from Narrabri Shire Council. The replacement is among several to be undertaken across the shire.
