Local bowler Helen Woodward is the Narrabri Women’s Bowling Club’s veteran singles competition champion for the second year running following a 12-shot victory in Thursday’s final.
Woodward challenged Kay Carolan in windy conditions and won 28 shots to 16.
Carolan conceded the first two ends of the match to Woodward but rallied to lead 7-4 after six ends. By the eighth end, the score was 9-8 to Carolan, and she then won three of the next four ends to establish a 13-9 lead.
There had been 21 ends contested when the score was tied at 15-all, and Woodward then scored 13 shots to Carolan’s one across the next six ends to win the game 28-16 after 27 ends.
The victory continued Woodward’s dominance in the Narrabri Women’s Bowling Club’s veteran singles arena after she was crowned the champion in 2023, and was a semi-finalist in 2022 and the runner-up in 2021.
Social bowls was also contested at Narrabri Bowling Club last Thursday.
There were three matches of three-bowls triples played. Val Falkiner, Janet Coleman and Stuart Coleman drew 13-all with Ash Lamb (visitor), Lyn Wedesweiler and Bill Rosewarn, Rhonda Fitzgerald, Glennis Godden and Lyn Tuckey beat Trish Odonnal (visitor), Cecile and Di Chessells 20-11, and Berice Eather played swinging lead and with Carol Demamiel and Tony Redman draw 19-all with Bruce Tomlinson and Dean Hulbert.
Narrabri Women’s Bowling Club’s minor singles competition will begin this Thursday, May 9. Fixtures are as follows:
Rhonda Fitzgerald v Berice Eather (marker – Cecile); Janice Foxe v Di Chessells (marker – Lyn Tuckey); Carol Demamiel v Glennis Godden (marker- Ronnie Dewar).
The semi-finals of the club triples that were to be played on Saturday, May 4, will be played on Saturday, May 11, depending on how the players from Narrabri go in the Bowls NSW State Carnival. Those fixtures are as follows:
Glennis Godden, Di Chessells and Eva Sadler v Dawn Armstrong, Marie Redman and Cindy Neil; Mary Wheeler, Berice Eather and Kay Carolan v Carol Demamiel, Janice Foxe and Lisa Pillar.
There were no men’s bowls matches played on Saturday, May 4 due to the rain. The same club fours games are now to be played on Saturday, May 11. Fixtures are as follows:
Terry Wilson, Richard Little, Steve Daskey, and Tony Redman v David Briggs, Laurie Gilbert, Bill Rosewarn and Dave Dewar; Col Armstrong, Stuart Coleman, Graham Rose and Len Ryan v Anthony Welchman, Ron Ryan, Ian Macmillan and Scott Dewar.
