During term two Narrabri High School MC class undertook a study of Ancient Egypt during their history classes.
Over the course of the term, the class looked at many aspects of this fascinating ancient society.
These included – the physical features of Egypt, such as the importance of the Nile river to the life of Ancient Egyptians, a timeline of the different Egyptian dynasties, the use of hieroglyphs, the role of the Pharaoh and other levels of Egyptian society, the foods eaten by Ancient Egyptians, and lastly the mummification process.
This fascinating unit allowed the class to participate in a variety of fun activities.
The students used air drying clay to make their own cartouches.
Students shaped the clay into an oval and then carved their names in using hieroglyphs, after which they were painted gold.
They also made Egyptian flatbreads from scratch, which proved tricky as they needed a lot more flour than the recipe called for but were delicious served with honey.
Amulets were created similar to those used in the mummification process with air drying clay.
Canopic jars were shaped as seen in the mummification process.
Tomatoes were ‘mummified’ to later be stored in their canopic jars.
