It was a big day in the pool for Burren Junction Public School at the recent State Swimming competition, where they won gold in the Peter Dobson Small Schools Relay by a country mile.

Super‑fast, super fish Angus Harris, John McMahon, Aggie Burke and Tabitha Shearer swam their hearts out, claiming victory with a speedy time.

Readers might remember BJPS took home silver last year, cruising into the school’s history books in what was believed to be the best result ever for the small but mighty school in that particular relay race.

Perhaps inspired by 2025’s silver success, the talented team did one better this year — kicking harder and swimming faster — as Burren blitzed the competitive field to touch the wall first and take out top honours.

The crowd of Burren families and swimming friends cheered, while the wonders of modern technology again allowed the race to be recorded and live‑streamed, complete with helpful bells and whistles for those watching back home, including commentary.

The ‘awesome foursome’ from Burren received high praise for putting in hours of training and working well as a team.

Of course, the mammoth efforts of their parents and families — who clocked up countless kilometres getting the BJPS students to training — are also worthy of a round of applause, along with the commitment of their coaches.

The Peter Dobson relay is a race at the NSW Primary Schools Sports Association swimming competition for small schools with between 26 and 54 students.

The competition is held at Olympic Park in Homebush — an incredible experience for the young swimmers, who also competed in individual races on the day and enjoyed cheering on their swimming mates from other schools, with many friendships formed over the swim season.
