Red Cross has long been a valued part of the Narrabri district community and on August 13 Narrabri Red Cross Club – formerly Narrabri ‘branch’ will join celebrations of the 110th national anniversary of the organisation.
A birthday lunch hosted by the volunteer members of Narrabri Red Cross Club will be held at the Narrabri Bowling Club and everyone is welcome.
“It’s a chance for local people to come along and show their appreciation for everything Red Cross has done over the decades,” said long serving member Kath Davis.
Red Cross Narrabri has recently been re-badged as the Red Cross Club – the services remain essentially the same, fundraising and advocacy, but Red Cross won’t be involved in disaster or emergency response work as they have been in the past.
Meanwhile a Second World War vintage embroidered table cloth now housed in Narrabri’s Old Gaol museum is a testament to the long service of Red Cross and the community engagement Red Cross enjoyed.
The table cloth is embroidered with the names of hundreds of local members and supporters.
More than 400 signatories wrote their names on the cloth in 1942 with an accompanying donation and their names were subsequently embroidered.
Narrabri Red Cross joined hundreds of Red Cross branches across Australia in sending comforts – food and knitted – to servicemen and women on the front lines and in Australia, a tradition which began towards the end of World War I.
The community is invited to attend the lunch, but people are asked to book by phoning Judy Michell, 0428 657 999, by August 9.
People will be asked to pay for their own lunch – and are welcome to make a donation to Red Cross as well.
“And we are inviting people to wear something red to the lunch,”said Mrs Michell.
