The Wee Waa Bowling Club’s 2023/24 season A-grade singles and A-grade triples finals were both played on the Laurie Hoad synthetic green across the weekend, with Ty Baker and Steve Berger featuring in both games.
Baker got the upper hand in both matches as he teamed up with Bruce and Todd Cowan on Saturday to beat Berger, Chris Crutcher and Brett Pillar 31 shots to 11 in the triples decider, before outscoring Berger 26 shots to seven in the singles final on Sunday.
The B-grade pairs final was also set to be played on Saturday but it was postponed.
The triples final got off to a red-hot start as four shots separated the sides after 14 ends.
Baker and the Cowan duo got off on the front foot as they scored a three on the first end, and they won four of the next six ends to establish an eight shots to three lead after seven ends.
Berger, Crutcher and Pillar then fired back as they won four of the following seven ends to reduce their deficit to four as the scoreboard read 13 shots to nine after 14 ends.
Baker and the Cowans took it up a gear from there as they went on a three-end run to lead 20 shots to nine.
The trailing trio scored a two on the 18th end as the score became 20 shots to 11, but Baker and the Cowans then scored 11 shots to nothing across the following five ends to go ahead 31-11.
There were just two ends left to play in the 25-end match at that stage but the two teams called it at the 23-end mark as Berger, Crutcher and Pillar were unable to overcome their deficit.
Baker then got off to a flying start in the A-grade singles match on Sunday as he claimed the first six ends to set up a 10 shots to nothing lead in the first-to-25 match.
Berger got himself on the board with a two on the seventh end and he then won three of the next five ends to get himself back in the contest and make the score 14 shots to seven.
Baker went on another dominant run that saw him claim five straight ends – two, three, two three, two – to go ahead 26 shots to seven and bring the match to a close after 17 ends.
That saw Baker claim the Wee Waa Bowling Club’s A-grade title for the second time.
The club announced this week that the B-grade final is one of four games that must be completed by Sunday, September 1. Those four games are as follows:
