The August monthly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held on Tuesday, August 13, chaired by president Russell Stewart with 20 members in attendance.
Matters discussed at the meeting included the announcement of a ‘Meet the Candidates’ event planned for September 5 at The Crossing Theatre at 6pm.
Everyone in the shire is encouraged to come along and listen to the candidates.
“It is an opportunity to know who represents us,” said Mr Stewart.
Gilly Goddard from Narrabri Shire Council spoke of the consultation process in place regarding changing the speed limit to 40kph in Maitland Street’s CBD between Bowen and Killarney Streets.
Submissions are being invited now. The council is in caretaker mode so the outcome will be decided by the new shire councillors after the September 14 elections.
One of the chamber members asked, tongue in cheek, if there was any chance that the 10kph being taken off the main street can be put on Ugoa Street.
The Business Awards presentation dinner on September 14 is fast approaching and will be a gala event.
Tickets are limited to 300 and selling quickly.
People are urged to purchase their tickets as soon as possible.
The Narrabri Christmas Carnival is scheduled for Friday, December 13 in Maitland Street with major sponsors already secured.
Guest of honour was student doctor Isabelle Le Creps who gave an interesting account of her experience to those present.
Isabelle is from France originally, is a skilled engineer and in recent years has undertaken a degree in medicine which she will complete in the coming months.
Isabelle is participating in the Longitudinal Integrated Clerkships program which has placed her and her colleague Tom Masters, living and working as apprentice rural doctors in Narrabri for 19 weeks.
The LIC program is a new initiative as part of the joint medical program (JMP) of UNE and the University of Newcastle under the academic co-ordination of Dr Maree Paxty, Associate Professor of General Practice for UNE.
The president closed the meeting shortly after 7pm.
The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 10 with everyone welcome to attend.
