The October long weekend saw more than 40 former students and teachers travel to Narrabri to celebrate the 140th year anniversary of Narrabri West Public School.
Many travelled long distances from around NSW to join in the celebrations, with Joy Kent (nee Bloomfield) travelling over 1100 kms from Eden (far South Coast) to join the celebrations.
Former West School teacher 1958/59, Joan Woods and husband Barry travelled down from the North Coast to join in the celebrations which was much appreciated given that
Joan is still recovering from a recent health issue.
Various events were held over the weekend with a Friday informal night for drinkies and dinner at the Tourist Hotel. With a free day on Saturday to build up for the formal evening function at the Narrabri Bowling Club, guests gathered to savour a delicious buffet and were entertained by the ‘Narrabri Rockers’, Chris and Cecille.
On Sunday the brave and hardy visited the West School for morning tea catered for by the 1st Narrabri West Scouts. This was followed by lunch at The Crossing Theatre where they said their goodbyes until the next reunion.
Yes, until the next reunion.
Organising committee convenor Keith Miller was delighted with the weekend’s events. “We had a great weekend of catching up with new and old school friends.
It was so good to get together and relive the wonderful memories of our Narrabri West School days.
“Numbers were down a little from the 2022 reunion, however, what we lacked in numbers, we made up for with enthusiasm.”
Keith said it was so good to welcome many first-timers to the reunion with former teachers and students from the 1940s, 50s and 60s joining in the frivolities. He indicated that the organising committee would aim for another reunion in a few years to enable Westies to once again experience the spirit of camaraderie that exists within the group.
He gave special thanks to the organising committee with special mention to Cheryl Pawley for pulling the 2024 reunion together and of course, special thanks also to the current Narrabri West school principal Tania Nichols for her support of the organising committee.
