David Rooney honoured with life membership of 2Max FM

Long-time announcer on 2Max FM, David Rooney has been honoured for his decades of involvement with the community radio station through the awarding of a life membership.

The life membership was announced at the station’s recent annual general meeting, honouring Mr Rooney’s 25 years of service.

Mr Rooney presents two programs on Saturday nights – ‘Lonely Nights’ from 5pm to 7pm and ‘Over the Bull Bar’ from 7pm to 9pm.

‘Lonely Nights’ is a more recent addition to his radio repertoire, featuring love music, however, it’s the boppy music on ‘Over the Bull Bar’ which has been Mr Rooney’s signature program during his long tenure at 2Max FM.

“I’m very passionate about music,” Mr Rooney said.

Following a car accident in 1999, music provided great therapy for Mr Rooney.

“I just kept at it. Music really helped me,” he said.

That love of music also has spilled into his service as a Group 4 Rugby League referee.

At the station’s annual general meeting, Anthony Welchman was returned as president, with Jeff Cloake as vice president. Sue Solomon will serve as secretary, Marg Hallett as treasurer, with Max Pringle OAM, Chris Gleeson, Frank Crump, Brenda Davis, Katie Polsoni and Rebecca Taylor on the committee.

Mr Welchman said the community radio station welcomes new volunteers and would particularly welcome younger members.

The station has celebrated achievements, including upgrades to the antennas at Mount Dowe as well as back-up player in the case of outages. Solar panels have also been placed on the Barwan Street station.

“We are very proactive when it comes to grants,” Mr Welchman said.
