Narrabri Bowling Club’s 2024/25 season major pairs competition got underway at the John McNamara Owen Campey Green on Saturday where three teams won their way through to the semi-finals.
Eight teams entered the competition but Steve Daskey and Len Ryan went through automatically after receiving a forfeit from Anthony Welchman and Bill Rosewarn.
There were two matches played on Saturday morning, one of which saw this season’s minor pairs competition winners Ian Macmillan and Stuart Coleman take the green. They challenged Graham Rose and the recently-crowned club singles champion Tony Redman and scored a 23-9 victory to progress to the semi-finals.
The other match saw Larry Scott and Kevin Baguley beat Bruce Tomlinson and Colin Armstrong 31-9.
One more match was played in hot conditions on Saturday afternoon as Richard Little and David Dewar took down David Field and Scott Dewar 23-7.
The semi-finals will be contested at Narrabri Bowling Club this Saturday, February 1, from 9.30am. Little and Dewar will meet Scott and Baguley, while Daskey and Ryan take on Macmillan and Coleman.
The comp will also host a losers’ section playoffs series, with Rose and Redman to challenge Tomlinson and Armstrong on Saturday morning.
Narrabri Bowling Club also hosted Thursday night barefoot bowls last week. There were 15 players who took to the greens for a game.
Doug Mackereth played swinging lead and with Stephen Eather downed Rhonda Fitzgerald 15-10. The other three pairs games were all close contests that were decided by two shots as Dawn Armstrong and Janice Foxe beat Ian Schweitzer and Lyn Tuckey 12-10, Bruce Tomlinson and Steve Daskey outscored Berice Eather and Eva Sadler 13-11, and Di Chessells and Colin Armstrong went down 16-14 against Carol Armstrong and Keith Stoltenberg.

In other bowls news, two Narrabri Bowling Club ladies will be in action in North West Bowls’ 2024/25 season State Women’s Pairs semi-finals this Saturday morning in Armidale.
Eva Sadler and Lisa Pillar were two of three teams that competed at the Lightning Ridge qualifier in August last year, and they prevailed 33-13 and 29-11 against Lightning Ridge teams to progress to the final four.
They will take on West Tamworth Sports and Bowling Club’s Sherilee and Zoe Stewart in their semi-final, and the other will see Inverell Sporties Bowls Club duo Debra Lehman and Susanne Gemmell meet Gunnedah Services and Bowling Club’s Charli and Ella Cameron.
The winners of those two matches will qualify for the final on Saturday afternoon, and the winner of that match will progress to the NSW state finals, which will be held later this year in April.
