The Bellata CWA hosted a special lunch last Sunday at the war memorial hall, to celebrate reaching their 100-year milestone.

CWA member Rhonda McPherson spoke on what a great afternoon it was looking through history as well as looking towards the future.

“All of the ladies were thrilled and had lots of fun going through the old minute books,” Rhonda said.

“We think roughly 70 people attended the celebration which was great to see the support.

After a wonderful lunch, the cake was cut by Namoi Group president Mrs Sandra Hunter and Bellata CWA branch president Mrs Val Smith.

“I’ve been a member for about 40 years, and it still makes me so proud to serve our community and welcome newcomers to our branch.

“Whether it is a wedding, school function or a clearing sale, we like to think that we cater for a lot of things.

“It is what they were doing back then, that we are still putting to action,” Rhonda said.

First formed on July 4, 1925, the Bellata branch continues to serve their community, with a strong cohort of 27 members, with two of these being life members.

Such as Edna Promnitz who has just turned 103 and still tries to involve herself with the CWA as much as she can.

During wartime, CWA were still active and helping as much as they could.

Over 40,000 vests were made during the war and during the early 1940s, CWA began making camouflage netting for the military.

“I like to think that we keep on with that legacy of simply helping the community and those in need.

“Over the last six months, the Bellata branch have catered for the Bellata Public School biggest morning tea and many other local events around the area.

“There has been a lot of terrific members. They don’t make a lot of noise, but they truly make the biggest impact in our communities.

“There has definitely been a humble nature created at Bellata CWA, with most members happy to do things in Bellata itself and help put us on the map.

“It has also been announced that the Bellata CWA will be starting a new history book to highlight the end of a century and beginning of a new era.

“Rhonda also mentioned a couple of things to look forward to with the Bellata CWA.

“This year we are bringing back our Christmas in July event after a successful time last year.

“We definitely look forward in continuing to serve the Bellata community and district, remembering the 100 years behind us as we enter a new era,” Rhonda said.
