Christmas was feeling a lot chillier as Meals on Wheels hosted yet another successful Christmas in July lunch at the RSL last Wednesday.
The room was filled with cheer as tables were quickly filled with both clients and volunteers ready to feast.
Donna MacMillan from Meals on Wheels was very happy to see so many smiling faces chatter.
“It’s always a great social occasion with both clients and volunteers there, especially those people who are isolated, it means a lot to them.” Donna said.
“It was a lovely time for everyone to come together over a beautifully prepared Christmas lunch made by the wonderful Will and the RSL staff,” she said.
Along with a delicious lunch and great company, the afternoon featured a jolly Christmas tree with some goodies underneath, which was a hit.
“The gifts of course are something that we try and do each year because everybody loves a lucky door prize,” Mrs MacMillan said.
“So, we have at least a third of the number of attendees, this way they all have a one in three chance minimum of getting a prize.
“One of our volunteers actually donated around eight prizes to us, one of which being a lovely pair of gloves and a scarf.”
As the community would already know, Meals on Wheels do so much for their clients and the entire town of Narrabri. But none of this would be possible without their wonderful volunteers who constantly show up in support of our local community.
“We always make a point of letting our volunteers know how much we appreciate them,” Mrs MacMillan said.
“Especially in these times where volunteer numbers are declining everywhere, we have been extremely lucky to have a constantly growing team.”
Donna always loves receiving feedback from newcomers as it is a constant reminder of what Meals on Wheels are all about.
“As one new volunteer said to me ‘I didn’t think I’d know anybody but then I sat down at a table and in about 10 minutes, everybody’s talking and laughing, I had the best time – and she even won a lucky door prize,” Mrs MacMillan said.
That pretty much sums up the magic of Meals on Wheels and the wonderful community of friendships and connections built.
