Our Year 11 biology students completed a three-day fieldwork excursion at Cascade Environmental Education Centre, near Dorrigo, linking directly to their ecosystem dynamics module.
On the coastal rock platform, students investigated the intertidal zone, using transects and quadrats to study the variety of plants and animals that survive between the tides, and how factors like salinity, temperature, and light affect their survival.
In the rainforest, students also carried out ecological fieldwork exploring how plants interact within the ecosystem while surveying ancient Antarctic Beech trees – living links to a much older climate.
The excursion gave students the chance to experience unique environments they wouldn’t normally encounter and to take part in real-world science just like professional ecologists and researchers.
A big thank you to Cascade EEC for hosting and supporting such a valuable learning opportunity.
