Narrabri Shire Council will formalise its financial support arrangements for local business chambers.
Councillors agreed to adopt the new model of funding events conducted by the chambers of commerce in Narrabri, Wee Waa and Boggabri. The arrangement is similar to a recently adopted plan, which formalised support for local war commemorations.
As part of the plan adopted at the November meeting, council will financially support the Narrabri and District Chamber of Commerce Business Awards and Christmas Street Carnival, the Wee Waa Chamber of Commerce Christmas Mardi Gras event and the Boggabri Chamber of Commerce Christmas event.
In this financial year, $6500 will be allocated, then increasing to $8925 in 2026/27, $9372 in 2027/28 and $9843 in 2028/29.
“The proposal provides financial certainty for the shire’s chamber of Commerce groups, allowing them to plan and deliver festive community events with confidence. The focus is on creating vibrant activities that support local businesses and foster community spirit, particularly during the festive season and for the annual Narrabri Business Awards,” the council business paper stated.
“The arrangement clarifies council’s role in supporting the festive events and the Business Awards, setting expectations and ensuring that support remains within council’s resourcing capabilities.
“It fosters a collaborative approach that encourages local ownership, ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, and supports the successful delivery of community events.”
In a report tabled at the meeting, council recognised the vital role of the shire’s chamber of commerce groups in fostering community spirit and supporting local business.
“Annual events, such as the Christmas carnivals and Business Awards, are key to township activation, economic development, and community cohesion,” the report stated.
Cr Greg Lamont moved that council endorse the new arrangement. This was seconded by Cr Navin Erathnage.
