May and Ron Boxsell’s contribution to the Boggabri Homes for the Aged – ‘Glentarkie’ committee was recognised by committee vice-president David Grover.

Mr Grover said: “May has been a constant and tireless worker for the committee, for a period of fifty plus years and carried out the position of treasurer for 44 years.”

Mrs Boxsell was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation by Mr Grover, a 50-year badge was pinned on Mrs Boxsell by her daughter Wendy Bacon and the current treasurer Jennifer Grover, presented May with a bouquet of flowers.

Mr Boxsell replied on behalf of his wife and said: “The first Home for the Aged meeting was held in November 1967.

“May’s mother was elected treasurer, and I know that May helped her in that role.”

“I know that May was a member of the committee at the first opening in 1970.

“When May’s mother went back to England in 1971, May took over as treasurer and stayed in that position for 44 years, only leaving the committee this year.”

“In the early days, May was the community nurse and would check on the oldies when she collected the rent.

“A bonus was during the holidays she would take our children with her and then the grandchildren, which the residents loved.”

Then came the surprise that Mr Boxsell wasn’t aware of; the committee presented him with a Certificate of Recognition for his outstanding and tireless contribution of time and unwavering support to the Boggabri Home for the Aged.

Mr Boxsell is the current president and has been for many years.

He said he was totally surprised as he thought he had a finger on the pulse of most things, but the committee had ‘snuck this passed him’.
