ArtsNational Narrabri celebrated a start to their 2026 season of arts talks with London-based guest speaker Ian Swankie presenting an illustrated talk on Great Railway Stations in cinema one at The Crossing Theatre on Monday, March 9.
Mr Swankie is currently visiting Australia on an ArtsNational tour with his wife, Annette.
An attendance of 93 members and visitors enjoyed an in-depth look at stations in Australia and around the world, featuring some stunning designs.
When we think of a railway station, the first thing that comes to mind is people on the move, trains arriving and departing, and the traffic that characterises them, especially in large hubs.
However, there is an important aspect that identifies stations and has the ability to transform them into iconic structures – architecture and design.
Architecture is a decisive element for a railway station, making it instantly recognisable and transforming it into a landmark for the history of the city or town, and for the community in which it stands.
