Sid Harvey’s rookie season in the Super Rugby Pacific competition reached a new height on Saturday night when the Narrabri boy scored his first try for the NSW Waratahs.
The 20-year-old made his debut off the bench in round four on Friday, March 6, and has since started every match. He played on the wing in round five before moving to fullback and playing in the number 15 jersey for the side’s three most recent matches.
Harvey and his NSW teammates have only won one game in that run of fixtures, and it was the Narrabri boy who played a key role in securing that victory. It came in round seven when the Waratahs defeated the ACT Brumbies 30-28 in Canberra, with Harvey nailing three penalty goals to make it 30-21 after it was locked at 21-all on the hour-mark.
The Brumbies managed a late converted try, but Harvey’s boot had already secured the points at that stage.
The Waratahs then travelled to New Zealand for their round eight contest and they went down 42-14 against the Chiefs in Hamilton.
Despite the tough loss, it was a memorable game for Harvey as the former Narrabri Junior Blue Boar charged onto a Max Jorgensen pass close to the line in the 31st minute and dived over to score his maiden try before nailing the conversion.
Despite being part of four losses in five games, Harvey has been impressing on an individual level and currently leads the Super Rugby Pacific competition’s rookie of the year race.
He and his teammates are ranked seventh on the competition ladder and will be looking to climb higher when they meet Moana Pasifika at Allianz Stadium in round 10 after this weekend’s round nine bye.
