The Narrabri Parkinson’s Support Group gathered in Post Office Square on World Parkinson’s Day on Thursday, April 11 to raise awareness for a cause that is close to the hearts of many members of the community.

Part of World Parkinson’s Awareness Month is an opportunity to reflect on the international recognition of people living with the neurodegenerative disorder and to educate the public about the disease and its impact on those individuals and family members affected by it.

There are currently 25 members in the Narrabri group who gather every second Monday of the month, at the Presbyterian Church hall.

This year’s World Parkinson’s Day theme is “Living Well with Parkinson’s.”

Rotary Club of Narrabri provided the official barbecue, and there were also cakes, baked goodies, and tea and coffee, along with Mother’s Day raffle tickets.

The group is looking forward to their free education day at the Narrabri RSL Club and invites the community to come and learn more about living with and supporting those living with Parkinson’s.

Neurologist Dr Stephan Duma will be joining the morning tea and lunch as a guest speaker via Zoom meeting, and other speakers will also be present on the day.

“We’re here to provide community support for people living with Parkinson’s in the Narrabri area,” said Vice President Faye Kirk.

“We do a lot of fundraising for Parkinson’s NSW and get a lot of support from the community as well. The wonderful group here provides support to residents in the area living with Parkinson’s and does a wonderful day of fundraising,” said Ruralfit movement disorder Nurse Jo Lavelle who travelled from Tamworth for the gathering.

Being based in Tamworth, Jo covers New England Northwest but comes up to Narrabri Parkinson’s Support group meetings every other month.
