The Narrabri District Junior Cricket Association’s 2018-19 season came to a close on Saturday morning with the last day of games which were followed by a presentation.
This year there were four age groups of junior cricketers.
The Woolies Junior Blast (previously known as the MILO Blast) included cricketers aged 5-7-years-old.
There were also under-9, under-12 and opens age groups.
At the presentation on Saturday each cricketer received a participation medal and there were other awards handed out to the under-12s, opens and intertown players.
Award winners were as follows:
Under-12s most improved – Ashley Finlay, Bailey Cory and Sam Ferris.
Opens most dedicated players – Alyssa Ford (female) and Will Ford (male).
Encouragement award – Tallen Robinson.
Under-12s intertown batting – Clay Hoffman.
Under-12s intertown bowling – Jonty Fowler.
Under-14s intertown batting – Joey Fowler.
Under-14s intertown bowling – Sid Harvey.
Narrabri District Junior Cricket Association chairman Craig Gleeson labelled the season a success despite numbers not quite being where the Association would have liked.
“We weren’t where we were hoping with our numbers,” Gleeson said.
“But with the numbers we did have it helped the skill level increase significantly.
“We were restricted with numbers from under-12s up, this year we lost about 11 kids who went away to boarding school between the under-12s and the opens.
“That’s a team full of cricketers which makes it a bit hard especially after Christmas.
“Numbers is something we will look at and next season we will plan a little bit earlier.
“But a credit to our opens players they were unreal.
“We gave them a fair bit of responsibility and they picked their own sides week to week.
“We put that extra responsibility on them and they thrived I think.
“We decided to do that to try and prepare them a little bit more for what senior cricket is really like.”
