Narrabri wheelchair basketballer Keltan Williams recently travelled to Townsville where he played for NSW at the 2019 Kevin Coombs Cup from Wednesday, April 17, to Friday, April 20.

Keltan, the son of Mandy and Parish Williams, was part of a side which qualified for the bronze medal match at the tournament and won the contest in double overtime.

NSW took on Victoria in that match.

In the regular-tournament game NSW played against Victoria it was downed 55-41. However NSW entered the match determined to win and take home the bronze medal.

It did just that and it did it in extraordinary fashion.

At the end of regulation time the score was 65-all.

In overtime both teams scored 10 more points each and when the siren sounded the score was locked at 75-all.

That forced the game into double overtime where NSW would dominate, scoring seven unanswered points to win the match 82-77.

Keltan said that he had never experienced a match quite like that one.

“It was very stressful,” Keltan told The Courier.

“I think in the last two minutes of [regulation time] we actually came back from seven points behind.

“That was such a good feeling.

“Through the first overtime being tied up at the end of that was stressful.

“Going into two overtimes you don’t know what is going to happen.”

The Kevin Coombs Cup is a national wheelchair basketball tournament which is held annually.

It is a mixed competition where male (under-23) and female (under-25) players team up to compete.

The NSW side which competed at the 2019 tournament was announced on April 1.

15-year-old Narrabri High School student Keltan was named in the 10-player team to compete at the 2019 tournament, his third since making his debut in 2017 at just 13 years old.

The NSW side enjoyed a successful tournament this year.
